Hypersonic Laminar Instability on Round Cones Near Zero Angle of Attack

چکیده

Reliable predictions for hypersonic laminarturbulent transition will have to be based on simulation of the transition mechanisms. Accurate simulation of the second-mode instability-wave growth on a round cone at zero angle of attack would be a significant step toward this goal. Hypersonic stability experiments in this geometry are reviewed, and three are selected. Extensive and previously unpublished data from Stetson’s sharp and blunt cone experiments are reported. Approximate computations were carried out using inviscid-boundary-layer and e methods. The experimental results are compared to previous high-accuracy computations and to the present approximate computations. Quantitative agreement is at present insufficient for reliable e predictions. The difficulties with both experiment and computation are described.

Boundary Layer Transition over Blunt Hypersonic Vehicles Including Effects of Ablation-Induced Out-Gassing

Computations are performed to study the boundary layer instability mechanisms pertaining to hypersonic flow over blunt capsules. For capsules with ablative heat shields, transition may be influenced both by out-gassing associated with surface pyrolysis and the resulting modification of surface geometry including the formation of micro-roughness. To isolate the effects of out-gassing, this paper...

Experiments on Passive Hypervelocity Boundary-Layer Control Using an Ultrasonically Absorptive Surface

Recently performed linear stability analyses suggested that transition could be delayed in hypersonic boundary layers by using an ultrasonically absorptive surface to damp the second mode (Mack mode). Boundary-layer transition experiments were performed on a sharp 5.06-deg half-angle round cone at zero angle of attack in the T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel to test this concept. The cone was const...

Numerical Simulation of Surface Roughness Effects on Receptivity of Hypersonic Flow Over Blunt Cones

The accurate prediction of laminar-turbulent transition in hypersonic boundary layers is a critical part of the aerodynamic heating analyses on hypersonic vehicles. Despite decades of extensive research, the prediction of hypersonic boundary-layer transition is still mostly based on empirical correlation methods or the semi-empirical n e method because a number of physical mechanisms leading to...

Real-Gas and Surface-Ablation Effects on Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Instability over a Blunt Cone

There has been little research into surface-ablation effects on hypersonic boundary-layer instability, and the current understanding of real-gas effects on hypersonic boundary-layer instability still contains uncertainties. The objective of the current work was to analyze the hypersonic boundary-layer transition process using linear-stability theory, inwhich surface ablation, aswell as real-gas...

Elevator Sizing, Placement, and Control-Relevant Tradeoffs for Hypersonic Vehicles

Within this paper, control-relevant vehicle design concepts are examined using a widely used 3 DOF (plus flexibility) nonlinear model for the longitudinal dynamics of a generic carrot-shaped scramjet powered hypersonic vehicle. The impact of elevator size and placement on control-relevant static properties (e.g. level-flight trimmable region, trim controls, AOA, thrust margin) and dynamic prope...
